Dr. LaWana on Afrofuturism
Dr. LaWana uses Afrofuturism as a framework that leverages history as well as the present to inform visions of the future (as well as the past and the present) and encourage us to reverse engineer our way toward actions that lead us most closely to desired future states.

The Future is Watching:
Sinners, A Night at the Edge of Tomorrow
October 16 | 5:30 PM @ Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park
Join us for an electrifying evening where art, imagination, and Afrofuturism converge. In honor of the date the events in the film Sinners take place, this special program moderated by Ramel Wallace invites audiences to explore the film’s themes through the unique perspectives of four visionary creatives:
-
Ajani Brown, Africana Studies Professor at San Diego State University, brings cultural and academic insight into the film’s social and historical resonance.
-
Menefese Kudumu-Clavell, Independent Filmmaker, examines the cinematic craft, storytelling, and the power of visual narrative.
-
Hue Love, Visual Artist, offers a lens on symbolism, aesthetics, and the emotional architecture of Afrofuturist art.
-
Lonnie Lucas, Cosplayer, embodies character and creativity, connecting fandom, identity, and reimagined futures.
Experience an evening of conversation, reflection, and community as we step to the edge of tomorrow and ask: What does redemption look like in the future we are building?

Come meet and learn from comic universe builders, animation industry professionals as well as visionaries who are working every day to make the world better for us today and in the future.
We will be visited by local heroes and visionaries as well as special guests from near and far.
Come purchase collectibles and refresh yourself with food and beverages from local vendors.
This is a celebration of art, culture, and community along with a few calls to action if you are up for the challenge.
Afro Future Con (all ages) exists to bring individuals together and expose them to art and innovation that expands consciousness to include possibilities that are equitable and sustainable.
